Almost all religions will require fasting at some point when you practice them. Catholics will do it to repent, Muslims for Ramadan, etc. And it's so ridiculous! This is one reason why I don't like organized religion and do my own thing. It's not ridiculous! I'm anorexic, and I can't understand why people would CHOOSE to give up food for any period of time. If your deity loves you so much why would they make you do something with the potential to do such harm???

Let me explain from a Christian point of view. Fasting isn’t dont because He says you have to. And quite frankly food is not the only thing you can give up in honor of your commitment, but we’ll get to that later. When one chooses to fast, it’s not simply giving up food, and hang out until it’s over. You pray, you read scriptures, you communicate with God on another level. The whole point of fasting is to weaken the physical body and strengthen your spiritual self. That is why it is not required that you fast food specifically. You can give up anything that takes up most of your time. The sacrifice is all that matters. You’re giving up one thing that for you is important, so that you can focus on God, and strengthen your spiritual self and spiritual connection with Him. He knows your heart and if you struggle with an eating disorder He will not want you to fall back into that because some religious dude told you to. This is why a personal relationship with God is important. If music is your life, or if you watch tv all day, or if you spend a lot of time texting, those individual things would be the things you would give up when you fast. Also you don’t fast because someone said you should. It is a personal decision, the sacrifice has to come from the heart. :)
